On OutTraveler, I read about PlanetRomeo – seemingly a sort of European Grindr – and the results of a survey they conducted that ranks 127 countries on the reported level of happiness of gay men who live there, based on the responses that they received from more than 115,000 gay men.
Where are the happiest gay men? Iceland, scoring 79 out of 100 points. In fact, Scandinavian countries (if you count Iceland as Scandinavian) took four of the top ten spots, making me wonder if in my travel I am ignoring an important part of the world….maybe it is time to reshuffle my bucket list for next year?
Where are the least happy gay men? Uganda tied with Sudan, scoring only 20 out of 100 points. No real surprise there, based on the constant injustice and danger that GLBT people suffer in those countries.
The map below is courtesy of the Advocate, who cribbed it from PlanetRomeo; green is good, red is bad…. yellow and orange are somewhere in between.
For some perspective, the US comes in at number 26 – just behind Ireland, although I have a feeling that their happiness level is increasing pretty dramatically and that they will leave us in the dust very soon. Our northern neighbor Canada smokes us, showing up on the list at number 6, and our southern neighbor Mexico is pretty close on our bumper at number 32.
I urge you to check out the report and PlanetRomeo; they seem to have a sort of sexy social conscience and no, I had never heard of the app, either. Maybe I will have to check it out.
